THE CASE OF THE STRATEGIC DISAPPEARING

Nagesh Battula

The word “together” holds power. It’s a reminder that we are not meant to walk alone through life. We grow up surrounded by family, friends, and people who care about us. We share everything from meals, conversations, worries, and laughter.

Showing up for one another portrays our trust and love.

But there is something many of us feel but hesitate to admit. Even in the happiest relationships, there are moments when we feel like we need a little space for ourselves. It’s not because we are upset or want to run away, but because sometimes, we need a quiet pause to breathe and gather our thoughts.

Of course, wanting space for ourselves can make us feel guilty. Family is everything- that’s what we have been taught, right? We may worry about what others will think. What if they assume that we are being distant? Or worse- uncaring, selfish and ungrateful? So we stay available all the time. We respond to every call, join every conversation, and keep going without a break.

Tired from presence. From being needed, being asked, and being there.

But after a while, this can leave us feeling tired without knowing why. Our patience becomes shorter, small things begin to annoy us, and we react quickly instead of responding calmly. This doesn’t mean our love has changed, but we have forgotten to take care of our own minds. Like how the body needs rest, the mind needs stillness to have control over the emotions.

Strategic disappearing is not anywhere near cutting off people or avoiding responsibilities. It’s just taking a step back for a short time, on purpose, so we can return with clarity. It could be anything - a quiet walk, sitting alone with a cup of tea, reading a few pages of a book, or waking up a little earlier than everyone else to enjoy the silence alone.

Stepping away on purpose only to return feeling clearer.

These small yet thoughtful choices help us reconnect with our inner calm. When we allow our minds to take a break, our thoughts settle instead of racing. We feel lighter, and we go back to people who matter with more patience, attention, and kindness.

Being together is one of the best parts of life. It does not become weaker when we create space for it. In fact, space helps protect it. Love needs closeness, but it also needs room to breathe, right? Taking a back seat once in a while is not a sign that we care less. It is a way of making sure our presence is warm and genuine.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do for the people we love is to take a breath, find our balance, and come back ready to be fully there again.
